Earth Day!
Okay, so this is an after-the-fact post, but thank you to everyone who came out to see us. If you are a first time visitor, feel free to look around and maybe even sign up for the mailing list. The links that were on the fliers are posted at the end of this message, for anyone who would like to learn more about how Democrats at the national level are helping to improve and sustain the environment. Thanks again for a great event and we hope to see you at our events in the fall!

Good days!
A couple of good announcements to relate to our letter-writing activity from a couple of weeks ago.
One, the (Georgia state) House Democrats rallied together to kill what little remained of the GlennTax. There's still a little bit of mischief kicking around, but the notion that the wealthy would shirk their responsibilities and dump the burden of operating this state onto the rest of us is dead for the year. Those who benefit most from this society will continue to repay the most, as it well should be.
Check out the story here.
Next, a good step forward in the FISA fight. At the letter-writing meeting, we told Representative John Barrow that to vote with the Republicans was to stand in no one's interest but a criminal George Bush and the telecoms who knowingly broke the law (it was so obvious that even Sprint figured it out). He heard the cries from his own district, and turned toward the light on this important issue of personal security.
The story on that one is at DailyKos and in the NY Times.
Congrats, folks. |

Fight against domesty spying!
A few months ago, Democratic leadership in both the House and Senate bowed to President Bush's demands that we pass the Protect America Act in order to extend and protect his illegal domestic spying program. To their credit, this act was given a very short life and came up for renewal back in December. It was due for a quiet permanent extension, complete with forgiveness for private companies violating the Constitution by enabling the wiretaps requested by the Bush administration (with no law passed to authorize him).
Thanks to the dramatic efforts of Senator Chris Dodd, the permanent extension was blocked for some time. This was long enough to convince Speaker Pelosi to push for the RESTORE Act, which modernized FISA without letting law-breakers off the hook. The Senate then passed the Protect America Act.
In the procedure taught in textbooks, the next step was for a Conference Committee to reconcile the differences between House and Senate bills. Republicans, never much for rules or straightforward debate, simply boycotted the meetings to deny a quorum. Thus, both bills should die.
However, there is one final wrinkle, the House leadership may actually allow Bush to have his way. The Democratic leadership has been getting progressively bolder in its defiance of Bush, and now is the time to show our support and ask them to keep fighting.
Direct your friends to this online petition collected by the EFF, a group that traditionally fights for our electronic rights, and help them tell Congress to tell President Bush just where he can plug in that listening jack. |

Valentine's Day
Don't forget that this Thursday is Valentine's Day. We will be out on Skiles from 10 until 2 handing out condoms to promote safe sex and reproductive health. This is one of our most fun and casual tablings so it is a great introduction to the process. You can sign up for various time slots during the meeting today or send an email to Jillian at jgold3@gatech.edu. We hope to see you all there. Have a happy, and safe, Valentine's Day! |

Super Tuesday!
Hey all,
I'm sure you probably don't need a reminder, but next Tuesday is the big day for Presidential primaries. Despite what you may hear elsewhere, there are still three excellent candidates for the position: Senator (D-NY) Hillary Clinton, Senator (D-IL) Barack Obama and former Senator (D-NC) John Edwards. Any one of these folks is far better than Bush the Lesser and will easily do more for this country than any of the Reagan wannabes that are doing battle with each other on the other side.
It's a bit late to register to vote, but it would be a good time to double check where your polling place is (go to the Georgia Secretary of State website), remind your parents to mail you that absentee ballot and figure out which really is the right candidate for you.
If you want just the facts, this is an okay place. Or, if you like a little more analysis, go here and type in any candidates name (be sure to choose Stories and Diaries). I guarantee at least 20 hits of pro and con for each candidate.
Good luck and good voting! |
